German engineering firm EDAG will debut a new version of their technology study, the Light Car, at the Geneva Motor Show in March.  The concept will have what the company sees as being critical to the evolution of the electric car: a lightweight space frame.

The new concept, able to be scaled for small to mid-size cars, was meant to show how an electric car can be built at a total weight of 1,200 kilograms or less, including a battery pack capable of at least 150 km.  This is 35 kilos less than the Tesla Roadster, and a whopping 265 kilograms less than the MINI E.

"The electric drive system offers designers and developers huge potential for the realisation of truly novel vehicle concepts, to provide the consumer with an unmistakable type of vehicle, namely electric cars," said EDAG spokesman Jörg Ohlsen.  "As the next stage, we have developed a special vehicle concept which makes use of the potential of an electric motor, implementing it in our technology carrier in the sense of a purpose design car."

One impressive development of the car is the ability for the lightweight frame to be adapted for other vehicles with "minimal investment costs for tools and manufacturing equipment," according to the release.  To this, Ohlsen said, "worked out a proposal for an innovative production concept which takes into account the specific demands of electric vehicle production."

The first EDAG Light Car concept debuted at the Geneva Motor Show last year with an extensive use of a lightweight basaltic fiber instead of carbon fiber or aluminum.  Powered by a lithium-ion battery, the car makes extensive use of LED lighting.
