VIDEO:MINI taunts Porsche with ongoing PR challenge

MINI USA has produced an excellent video challenging Porsche to a race. The video, created by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay-backed website Funny or Die, is a direct parody of the extended training montage from Rocky IV.

The video is the latest in a ten-day back-and-forth between MINI USA President Jim McDowell, a former Porsche executive, and Porsche North America President and CEO Detlev Von Platen. It began with MINI placing a full-page ad in the New York Times challenging Porsche to a race at Road Atlanta, near Porsche NA headquarters. Porsche politely declined, saying that they are in motorsports to challenge themselves, not for publicity stunts. MINI fired back twice, first by flying a banner over Porsche NA that simply read, "Dear Porsche, Bring it! Love, MINI." The second is this video.

Will Porsche accept the challenge, in the spirit of Rocky v. Drago, Seabiscuit v. War Admiral, and Daniel v. Cobra Kai? Stay tuned!

The answer to the question we posed in the title comes to us in the form of five different conceptual studies, all made by Russian designer Vladimir G. The drawings show proposals for various kind of boats inspired in design by Ferrari, Porsche, Maserati and Bugatti models as well from Mercedes-Benz's SLS AMG Gullwing supercar. Porsche TranSport Pickup Truck Designed for Jewel Smuggling

Nouphone J. Bansasine, the designer who envisioned the Volvo SC90 4-door coupe, is clearly no purist when it comes to nameplates. How else could you explain his Porsche TranSport design?
The TranSport would fill a huge (and nonexistent) gap in the Porsche lineup for people who move "500 pounds of gold", diamonds, rubies and emeralds on a regular basis.
No, really. Going by Yanko Design's overview, this truck's purpose is to haul mobsters', oil sheiks', and Russian oligarchs' precious gemstones from point A to point B. I guess Fords, Chevys, and Rams are clearly just too plebeian.
All kidding aside, if Porsche ever decides to finally go off the deep end and build a truck, it should be like the TranSport. A big, brutish 4X4 in a suit that would be capable of giving Cadillac's Escalade EXT something to worry about.

Xenatec Shows Off its "Dream Cars": Bentley SUV, BMW 6-Series Sedan and More

Now that their limited production Maybach 57S Coupe has made the rounds, here are some of the other proposals from Xenatec. Since the company's specialty is chassis modification (and the necessary body work thereafter), they've got some ideas for a lengthened (and shortened) "dream cars".
Have a look at the gallery below and see what tickles your fancy. The SUV limos are a bit much, but the rag-top conversions don't look too bad (especially the CLS and 300).

Other winners include the standard limo conversions (like the Flying Spur and 300C), while big-time no-no's include that ridiculous 7-Series with the bubble top and the extended R8 and Carrera.
For those of you who thought the Porsche TranSport pickup (next post) was interesting, have a look at what Xenatec would do with the Cayenne to create a sport truck. Still want a Porsche truck?

New 2011 Porsche Cayenne CLR 550 GT

The new Cayenne is significantly prettier than the lumpy, first-generation model Porsche released upon us. Now it resembles a legitimate X5 competitor. Still, Lumma Design wants to take it a step further with its wide-body CLR 550 GT.

For now, though, it's all just renderings.

Lumma is crafting an add-on lip spoiler with integrated fog lights, LED running lights, headlight trim, and a ton of carbon fiber bits for the Cayenne's front end.

Its carbon-Kevlar hood will feature functional cooling vents and be raised slightly to cover the windshield wipers (reducing drag) around the cowl area.
Down the sides you can see Lumma's signature extra-wide fenders covering 22- or 23-inch wheels, between which are special air-directing side skirts helping to cool the rear brakes.

At the rear is the rest of Lumma's kit, which is a rear bumper, taillight trim, and a diffuser housing a very unique three-tipped exhaust.

Above that, there's a carbon spoiler mid-hatch and another strip of carbon which somehow "provide additional power". Downforce, I understand, but can anyone explain how two lines of carbon fiber make power?

If you're looking for real power to go with the looks, you'll have to contact the German folks over at Lumma Design. This kit is purely for show.

2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS

Here is a new and better look at the upcoming Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

We can spot in these photos the new carbon bonnet and side intakes, we also get a peek inside the Alcantara interior. Is that a roll cage bar near we see?

The 911 GT2 RS is a stripped-down race version of the already powerful GT2 (550 PS / 405 kW), likely featuring a roll cage and active suspension, and will come with 620 hp (462 kW) according to reports. It will weigh about 90 kg less than the 997.1 iteration GT2. Limited to 300 units, the GT2 RS makes the 0 to 100 km/h run in 3.2 seconds.

Expect more details when the car makes its debut on May 14. Price is said to be around €240,000 ($317,000).

TechArt Launches New Performance Kits for Facelifted Porsche 911 Turbo

TechArt has unveiled two new performance packages for the Porsche 911 Turbo (997.5).

The first package, dubbed the TA 097/T1, consists of a revised ECU and a high-flow air filter. Thanks to these modifications, the 3.8-liter engine produces 570 PS (419 kW / 562 bhp) - an increase of 70 PS (51 kW / 69 bhp). This allows the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.2 seconds, before topping out at 324 km/h (201 mph).

The TA 097/T2 package features a sport air filter, new manifolds, a custom exhaust, and a reprogrammed ECU. Output climbs to 620 PS (456 kW / 612 bhp) and 820 Nm (605 lb-ft) of torque, which enables the 911 to rocket from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.9 seconds and 0-200 km/h (124 mph) in a further 6.4 seconds. The top speed is 333 km/h (207 mph).

VIDEO:Porsche 918 Spyder in demand with 900 potential customers

Porsche is reporting that is has more than 900 potential customers for the upcoming 918 Spyder hybrid.

The 2-seater 918 Spyder hybrid was unveiled at the Geneva auto show last month and is an entirely new model for Porsche, which is aiming to expand its sales volume to around 150,000 units a year by developing new products.

The hybrid drivetrain on the 918 Spyder features a V8 with 368 kW (500 PS / 493 hp) coupled to three electric motors totaling 160 kW (218 PS / 215 hp). Doing the math on that gets you 528 kW (718 PS / 708 hp). The 0 to 100 km/h sprint comes in at 3.2 seconds and top speed is 320 km/h (198 mph).

Even more impressive are the consumption and emissions numbers - the 918 Spyder hybrid, Porsche claims, will have a remarkable fuel economy rating of 3 liters/100 km (78.4 mpg-US) and a CO2 emission rate of only 70 g/km.

"I'm confident that we will soon reach the threshold of 1,000 [potential customers]. We need 1,000 seriously interested people to make a sound business case," said Wolfgang Duerheimer, head of development at Porsche, in an interview at the Beijing auto show on Saturday.

The 918 Spyder hybrid is due to make its production-ready debut sometime in the next 5 years.

TechArt Panamera Black Edition gets matt wrapping

In a lighter-than-usual take on the Porsche Panamera, German tuning house Techart has unveiled a surprisingly tasty cosmetic-only package for Stuttgart's new four-door sports saloon.

Aside from the exterior, black is seen throughout the car's aero kit, 22-inch alloy wheels and brake calipers. The calipers are emblazoned with the TechArt logo in red.

The black/red contrast is replicated on the interior, where black leather and alcantara is hand stitched in red, with matching red piping along the seats. Carbon fiber trim elements are also used inside the cabin.

In addition, numerous interior components like trims, door entry guards, cup holder and the air vents are finished in a matte black design.

Pricing for the Techart Panamera Black Edition was not disclosed.

Ferrari Signed on for Transformers 3, Could Porsche be Far Behind?

Michael "Blow it all up" Bay has put the word out there: the 458 Italia is going to be representing Ferrari (and the Autobots) in the third Transformers movie, set to be released July 1st, 2011. Bay made the announcement while attending a Ferrari fundraiser at which the red-blooded Italian marque was raising funds to build a hospital in Haiti.

Also, his website mentions that John Malkovich (In the Line of Fire) and Frances McDormand (Fargo) are going to be in it, along with Ken Jeong (Señor Chang from Community).

Bay says, "We are going to shoot in LA, Chicago, Washington DC, Florida, Texas, Africa, Moscow, and China." Get your spy-shot cameras ready, people.

I'm thinking the Ferrari needs to be Chase (formerly a Testarossa) or Braver (formerly an F40). If not, it could just end up a badly-confused version of some other character I grew up with, like having ex-Porsche 935 Jazz being a thugged-out Pontiac Solstice (anyone else see his death in the first one as foreboding?).
