BMW Sports Coupe Concept by Krasnov Igor

You might remember talented Russian designer Krasnov Igor from 2 of his previous concept studies, a 4-door Ferrari-badged sport saloon and the Marussia supercar. This time, Krasnov has come up with a conceptual proposal for a BMW sports coupe with an unusual, yet stylish asymmetrical design. The unnamed design study appears to be partly inspired from BMW's fabric-skinned, shape-shifting Gina concept while borrowing some styling cues such as the tall double kidney grille...

Fiat Starts Combining Lancia and Chrysler Networks in Europe

Posted by Mr Dung Monday, May 24, 2010

In the continuing process of reorganizing Chrysler and Lancia, Fiat will be working to combine both brands' dealership and supply networks throughout Europe. The combined-dealerships will be known as Lancia throughout mainland Europe and Chrysler in the UK. The reason for that is Chrysler is currently established in the UK, while Lancia is not.
By 2014 the Lancia/Chrysler network is hoping to have 1,000 dealerships throughout Europe.

Now that their limited production Maybach 57S Coupe has made the rounds, here are some of the other proposals from Xenatec. Since the company's specialty is chassis modification (and the necessary body work thereafter), they've got some ideas for a lengthened (and shortened) "dream cars".
Have a look at the gallery below and see what tickles your fancy. The SUV limos are a bit much, but the rag-top conversions don't look too bad (especially the CLS and 300).

Other winners include the standard limo conversions (like the Flying Spur and 300C), while big-time no-no's include that ridiculous 7-Series with the bubble top and the extended R8 and Carrera.
For those of you who thought the Porsche TranSport pickup (next post) was interesting, have a look at what Xenatec would do with the Cayenne to create a sport truck. Still want a Porsche truck?

Hyundai Officially Denies Ram-Based Pickup Truck Rumors

Posted by Mr Dung Monday, May 17, 2010

There was a rumor floating around this week that Hyundai is in talks with Chrysler LLC to sell a version of the Dodge Ram pickup under its own brand in the States.
Today, the South Korean-based automaker vigorously denied the story through an official statement made from its U.S division.
"Hyundai Motor Co. denies that there are any current plans to bring a pickup truck of any type into the U.S. now or in the foreseeable future," the company said in its statement.
"Hyundai is not in discussion with Chrysler in regard to a selling a rebadged Chrysler Corp pickup truck, or any other vehicle, in the U.S," the automaker concluded.

Detroit 3 Closing Worker Pay Gap with Foreign Competitors

Posted by Mr Dung Tuesday, May 11, 2010

[AN/AP]

Sean McAlinden, an economist working for the Center for Automotive Research, says that due to shifts in UAW retiree / health planning US auto manufacturers may end up with a labor-cost advantage in the next few years. GM is used as the prime example.

Here's a look at the timeline:

In 2007, per-vehicle labor costs for GM were $1,400 more than Toyota, its largest international competitor. $950 of that was for retiree benefits.

In 2008, Detroit's Big 3 manufacturers (Ford, GM and Chrysler LLC) were reportedly paying their hourly employees $69,368 per year on average versus $70,185 being earned by employees at foreign-owned plants. Salaried employees at the Detroit automakers were making $122,963 versus $81,506 earned by foreign-based counterparts.

Now, after all the re-negotiations, GM is working towards a new goal: "[hiring] more workers at the lower wage and it [hiring] fewer skilled-trades workers, who make more money than other factory workers".

With 2,300 new employees working under the revised wage/retirement plans, GM's employees are only $2 more costly than Toyota's. McAlinden predicts that over the next 5 years, GM may even undercut Toyota's pay by up to $10.

Nissan, Ford, Chrysler lead U.S. sales gain of 20% in April

Posted by Mr Dung Tuesday, May 4, 2010

[Autonews]

Automobile sales in the U.S. market bounced back resoundingly last month with Ford, Nissan and Chrysler posting the biggest gains.

Vehicle retail sales were up 20 % in the United States for the month of April. Industry sales totaled 982,302 units for the month, up from 819,692 for April of last year. That figure means a seasonally adjusted rate of 11.5 million unit sales for the year - an encouraging indicator but still well below the more than 16 million unit highs seen in the middle of the last decade.

Ford saw its sales rise 25%, with a sharp increase (42%t) in its F-Series pickup truck range and a 41% jump for its Escape SUV. Chrysler also had a 25% increase in sales, the first time it has seen a double-digit gain in five years. Nissan had one of the highest gains in the industry with a 35% jump.

But the benefits of higher sales were had by almost all automakers - with Subaru boosting sales by a whopping 48% and VW Group (including Audi) experiencing a much needed bump of 39%.

Even Toyota, plagued recently by recall problems and a federal fine for not reporting them on time, saw a rise in sales of 24% - driven by incentives the automaker has had to provide customers in order to maintain its market share.

Chrysler used the beautiful setting of Moab, Utah, as the backdrop for the unveiling of several tuned vehicles from the Jeep and Ram Truck line.  The models were tuned by Chrysler parts outfit Mopar, and are being shown off at the annual Moab Easter Jeep Safari this weekend.

The "Moparized" vehicles (Chrysler's words, not ours) is meant to show consumers the less-common parts available in the Mopar catalogue, as well as parts that might become available.  The six concepts shown off in Moab bring the total of Mopar-designed customs to 20 since 2002.

"Moab is a proving ground for us to test our vehicles on extreme trails alongside our customers," said Jeep Design Studio head Mark Allen.  "We will take all of the feedback we get from our customers right back to the design studio with us."

Of the six concepts, five are Jeeps.  They include the military-inspired Jeep Wrangler J7 with large tires and high clearance, the bright orange Jeep Patriot Extreme off-roader, the V6-powered Jeep Wrangler Trail Boss off-road vehicle with leather, the turbodiesel Jeep Nukizer 715 military machine with upgraded drivetrain, carbon fiber and pickup box, and The General.

The General is based on a 2009 Jeep Wrangler with a 4.5-inch lift kit, big off-road bumpers, rock rails, and more.  Also on the scene is the 5.7-liter V8 Ram PowerWagon full-size pickup with a 120-inch wheelbase, 40-inch tires, and four-inch suspension lift.

Despite all the negative publicity, it seems that Americans would still rather be driving a Toyota than a Chrysler product. According to Edmunds, Chrysler's consumer sales are down a HUGE 44% this year, versus Toyota's 14% drop.

Anyone quoting a 3% drop by Chrysler is factoring in fleet sales, and that isn't exactly fair. However, a Chrysler spokesperson says, "Fleet is part our businesses strategy...We have to rebuild consumers' confidence in the company...The fact that large companies are willing to buy our vehicles helps rebuild that confidence." Hopefully.

Here's what you can learn from some industry analysts:

Jesse Toprak, TrueCar: "You cannot viably survive with fleet and rental sales over 50%...The math just doesn't work."

Erich Merkle, President, Autoconomy.com: "The fact that [Chrysler's] losing share on the pickup side, it says to me that this goes beyond the product itself...I think Chrysler in the near term will be at the mercy of the market. They'll continue to lose market share, but they've got to hope that a rising tide will lift all boats."

Jeff Schuster, J.D. Power & Associates: "It really is survival mode for the next 18 months until they see product in the showroom...They're not finished with the turnaround yet. This is not something that can happen overnight."

If the Pentastar's lineup over the next couple years ends up being as promising as it looks, perhaps Chrysler won't have to keep leaning on fleet sales like an old man with a cane.

Maybe then, finally, we'll have a chance to see some legitimate, luxurious Chrysler compacts and small, sporty Dodges. And what if they try to pull another Sebring or Compass? I can't speak for anyone else here, but if that happens, take it easy guys. No tears shed on this side of the table.

Fiat Brings 500 BEV Electric Concept Car to Detroit

Posted by Mr Dung Monday, January 11, 2010

As you've probably already guessed by the title of this post, neither Fiat nor Chrysler published any details on the Fiat 500 BEV concept model that was showcased alongside the 500 Abarth at the American automaker's Detroit Motor Show stand. Nothing new here as we're in the dark about the "Chrysler Delta" also.

The car's name stands for Battery-Electric Vehicle and from what we've heard, it's pure study as Fiat has no plans to introduce a production version of the concept - at least not in this form.

To make a short story longer, the 500 BEV features a similar bodykit to the Abarth model minus the tail pipes at the rear as well as new alloy wheels.

Inside, the concept model gets sumptuous leather seats finished in red and a sport steering wheel accented by red stitching while the traditional gear lever has been replaced with push-button controls.

Talk about a crappy representation of a thinning yet still major player in the States like Chrysler and its Dodge and Jeep brands. Not only did Fiat Group's bosses decide to skip a press conference at the 2010 in Detroit but they didn't even bother -at least until the time that this post was written- to issue a press release on the Chrysler-badged Lancia Delta that was displayed at the firm's booth...

Not to pat ourselves in back, but our photoshop of the "Chrysler Delta" that we showed back in December was spot on as we correctly predicted the shape and more importantly, the styling of the chrome grille.

We did however overestimate the Fiat Group's rebadging capabilities as the unnamed Detroit Show car retained the Italian model's alloy wheels - we'll keep that in mind for next time.

There's no official word on the group's North American plans for the 4,522mm-long (177.9-inches or about the same size as the VW Jetta) hatchback, but we would like to hear your thoughts on the matter and in particular, if the Delta's styling would appeal to American consumers. Have your say in the comment section below.

2010MY Chrysler 300C: New Model Line-up goes on Sale in the UK

Posted by Mr Dung Sunday, January 3, 2010

If Chrysler keeps on schedule, then we'll be seeing the redesigned 300 sedan making its market debut in the U.S. and other countries sometime in the second half of the year. But for now, Chrysler's UK division has announced a new model-line up of its mid-size sedan for Britain. The new 2010 300C range will now offer four derivatives, the 300C SE, SR and SRT that are powered by 215HP 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine, and the SRT-8 fitted with a 425HP 6.1-litre V8 HEMI petrol engine.

The new entry-level 300C, the diesel-powered SE, is priced from £23,995 (approx. US$38,900) on the road.

Standard features include leather seats, ESP, ABS, front, rear and side-curtain airbags, heated front seats, dual zone climate control, LED ambient lighting, front fog lamps, parking sensors (front and rear), Xenon headlamps and rain-sensing windscreen wipers,18-inch alloys and an in-car entertainment system with CD player and MP3 capability and a six speaker Boston Acoustics sound system.

The 300C SR is priced at £24,995. In addition to the SE grade, SR models feature auto-dimming rear view mirror, upgraded Boston Acoustics sound system including subwoofer and uconnect GPS, uconnect phone with voice recognition, a hands-free communication system using Bluetooth technology.

Priced at £27,995, the 300C SRT offers in addition to the SR models a mesh grille with chrome surround, body coloured door mirrors and door handles, wheel arch extensions, 20 inch alloys, leather and suede trimmed sports seats and carbon fibre interior details.
The diesel-powered 300Cs are offered with a standard automatic transmission and can complete the 0-62mph (100km/h) sprint in 8.7 seconds while reaching a top speed of 143mph 0r 230km/h.

At the top-of-the-range is the 300C SRT-8 that costs £41,795 (about US$67,800 - in the States, the 300C SRT8 carries a sticker price of $47,315 not including taxes, but you may get a better price if you haggle the dealer).

The 300C SRT-8 with its 425HP and 420 lb-ft HEMI V8 goes from 0-62mph in 5.0 seconds, hits the quarter mile in the high 13-second range and has a top of speed of 165 mph or 265km/h.

A news report from the Advertising Age is criticizing Olivier Francois, CEO of both the Chrysler and Lancia brand who was appointed by the Fiat Group, for his decision to choose an Italian ad agency over Chrysler Group's longtime partner, BBDO Detroit, for a 30-second TV Spot on the Chrysler 300.

The author of the report, Jean Halliday, says that Francois decision "may not sit well with American taxpayers, who bailed out the ailing Chrysler earlier this year with billions of dollars in loans" and that "several hundreds of staffers of Chrysler Group's longtime ad agency, BBDO Detroit, will be out of work at the end of January when the contract expires."

As expected, the somewhat one-sided report, which was also posted on Autonews, goes on to pass judgment on the advertisement saying that it's very similar to a 2008 Lancia commercial calling for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma's pro-democracy leader and 1991 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, and that it does not connect to American consumers.

Chrysler's CEO, Olivier Francois said: "We produced the TV film in honor of all those who put their lives at stake in the hopes of making the world a better place. For Chrysler, this is a chance to use our brand image to join with others in the fight for peace and to knock down the walls that divide us. We at Chrysler believe in doing the right thing and making a difference."

Julie Roehm, a former Chrysler Group marketing chief said: "The message is a disconnect to what matters to people here. Americans are focused now on getting back to work and the economy back on track. I don't think the vast majority of Americans know who this woman is or frankly care. They have no idea who their customer is in the U.S. or have a clue how to connect with them."

Playing the devil's advocate, we must note that for one, we don't have all the details on the topic including the cost of the advertisement. Maybe the Fiat Group had a special deal going on with the agency - we don't know.

What we do know from Chrysler is that the spot was initially created as part of the Lancia brands sponsorship of the 10th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in Berlin Nov. 10-11, 2009. Furthermore, the spot first aired in Europe (on Nov. 12).

In other words, it's a global ad that doesn't only focus on U.S. consumers and more importantly, Chrysler joined Lancia's efforts, it didn't create a new type of ad.

We won't even touch the subject that nobody cares about who Aung San Suu Kyi is (nobody cared about smaller-sized fuel efficient cars here in the States a few years ago, and look at how the former Big Three are trying to catch up now...).

Unfortunately, some people do not understand that we live in the age of globalization. For any automaker or group of brands to survive today, they need to reach many different markets, both in terms of products and marketing.

If you want to sell cars all over the world, you also have to accept the fact that you will produce vehicles and hire people, agencies, etc, etc, from other countries. That's the way the game works, not only for American automakers but for everyone.

And if you want to criticize the Fiat Group for something, start from asking the Italians what's going to happen to the $73 million grant that Chrysler received from the Obama administration for the manufacturing of 220 plug-in hybrid and electric pickup trucks and minivans in St. Louis and in Michigan, now that the group's CEO Sergio Marchionne reportedly pulled the plug from the EV fleet.

Can't say that were fans of "badge engineering" especially when it comes to brands with a completely different mind-set and background, but like it or not, chances are that Fiat's tie up with Chrysler will most likely give birth to at least a couple of vehicles that will only differ in grilles and badges. The U.S. automaker's recently revealed five-year product plan hints at a few cars of this sort, but photoshop wiz, Theophilus Chin, took it upon himself to create a trio of 'Chrysler-ized' Lancias and vice-versa.

These include a proposal for a Lancia Thesis replacement based on Chrysler's well-received 200C mid-size sedan hybrid concept that was displayed at this year's Detroit Show, as well as Lancia-masked Chrysler Voyager and a Chrysler version of Lancia's premium compact hatchback, the Delta.

Fiat Terminates Chrysler's All-Electric Car Plans

Posted by Mr Dung Sunday, November 8, 2009

Just over a year ago, the Chrysler Group's newly formed Envi division unveiled a series of production-based electric cars that it planned to put on sale. Fast forward a few months, Chrysler went in and out of bankruptcy, sealed a deal with the Fiat Group and then, in August 2009 under the leadership of its new CEO, Sergio Marchionne, secured a $73 million grant from the Obama administration for the manufacturing of 220 plug-in hybrid and electric pickup trucks and minivans in St. Louis and in Michigan. Well, guess what;

According to a news report from Reuters, as part of the Marchione's recently announced five-year business plan to revitalize the Chrysler Group, Fiat has pulled the plug on the automaker's Envi division as well as the development of the test fleet for which it had received the government grant.

Chrysler spokesman Nick Cappa told Reuters on Friday that Envi, which was responsible for the EV range, will be absorbed in the normal vehicle development program and its former chief Lou Rhodes will head an electric car division for both Fiat and Chrysler.

The group's CEO Sergio Marchionne told reporters that for the time being and with the current technology available, he doesn't believe much in EVs and that electric cars would represent just "one or two per cent" (less than 60,000 vehicles) of Chrysler's sales by 2014.

"Until the (battery) storage gets resolved, I think electric vehicles are going to struggle," Marchionne said.

As of yet, there's no official word from Chrysler, but if the report from Reuters concerning the part about the scrapping of the 220 plug-in hybrids turns out to be true, one should wonder what's going to (or what should) happen to the $73 million grant that the automaker received. Post your thoughts in the comment section below.
