BMW Sports Coupe Concept by Krasnov Igor

You might remember talented Russian designer Krasnov Igor from 2 of his previous concept studies, a 4-door Ferrari-badged sport saloon and the Marussia supercar. This time, Krasnov has come up with a conceptual proposal for a BMW sports coupe with an unusual, yet stylish asymmetrical design. The unnamed design study appears to be partly inspired from BMW's fabric-skinned, shape-shifting Gina concept while borrowing some styling cues such as the tall double kidney grille...

Bugatti EB1.2 TSI and Bentley Continental Super Mini

Posted by Mr Dung Tuesday, June 8, 2010

[Autoblog.nl]

While we sincerely hope that no other supercar maker will ever follow in the degrading footsteps of Aston Martin and it's luxed-up Toyota iQ, the Cygnet, we have no problem whatsoever with photoshop artists attempting to imagine the impossible. In this case a pair of Bugatti and Bentley superminis, both of which would, in theory, be based on the VW Group's Polo, Ibiza or Fabia hatchbacks. The two designs were created by Autoblog.nl reader Jasper van der Heiden. Check them out after the jump.

[Xenatecgroup]

Now that their limited production Maybach 57S Coupe has made the rounds, here are some of the other proposals from Xenatec. Since the company's specialty is chassis modification (and the necessary body work thereafter), they've got some ideas for a lengthened (and shortened) "dream cars".
Have a look at the gallery below and see what tickles your fancy. The SUV limos are a bit much, but the rag-top conversions don't look too bad (especially the CLS and 300).

Other winners include the standard limo conversions (like the Flying Spur and 300C), while big-time no-no's include that ridiculous 7-Series with the bubble top and the extended R8 and Carrera.
For those of you who thought the Porsche TranSport pickup (next post) was interesting, have a look at what Xenatec would do with the Cayenne to create a sport truck. Still want a Porsche truck?

Bentley Mulsanne Engine Detailed

Posted by Mr Dung Monday, April 5, 2010

[Bentley]

Bentley has released new details about the Mulsanne's 6.75-liter twin-turbo V8 engine.

Taking nearly 30 hours to build, the engine features over 300 new (or significantly re-engineered) components to ensure it is more powerful and fuel efficient than its predecessor.

In terms of performance, the V8 produces 505 bhp (377 kW / 512 PS) and 1020 Nm (752 lb-ft) of torque. This enables the Mulsanne to rocket from 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds (0-100 km/h in 5.3 seconds), before hitting a top speed of 184 mph (296 km/h).

While this is pretty impressive for a car with a 2585 kg (5700 lb) curb weight, Bentley paid special attention to being eco-friendly. Due in large part to two new control systems, cam phasing and variable displacement, the engine has a 15 percent improvement in emissions and fuel consumption. Despite this, the Muslanne has a combined fuel consumption rating of 16.7 mpg UK (16.9 liters/100km).

Once the engines are completed, they are put on state-of-the-art balancing machines to rigorously test all the spinning components. Once they pass inspection, the engines are put through an 80-minute test cycle where engineers run the V8 from idle to maximum revs to simulate real-world driving conditions.

All Bentley Continental Models to Have Flex-Fuel Capability

[Autonews]

According to a recent report, the entire Bentley Continental range will be equipped with flex-fuel engines in June.

While details are limited, the cars will feature a flex-fuel version of the 6.0-liter W-12 engine. It will be able to run on petrol, E85 bioethanol, or a mix of the two.

When they are launched, over half of Bentley's lineup will be flex-fuel compatible. This is critical to the company's goal of reducing CO2 fleet emissions by 15 percent by 2012.

Look for more information to be released later this year.

[Bentley]

Bentley has released a new video featuring the production process of the Bentley Mulsanne.  The 3m 20s video focuses on transitioning the car's body-in-white to a fully painted vehicle.

New customers will be able to choose from at least 115 different colors for their luxury car, though more are possible with the company's "unlimited palette."  28 of these were created exclusively for the Mulsanne.  The car gets six different layers of paint, including three for the top coat, and two coats of lacquer.  Satin finishes, and two-tone versions will be possible.

While the footage is not the most exciting video ever produced, it will be enjoyed by fans of the brand, and those wanting a more inside look into auto production.

Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible Unveiled

Posted by Mr Dung Tuesday, March 2, 2010

What you're looking at the latest stunner to come out of Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera's garage in Milan. The Flying Star, based on Bentley's 610-horsepower GTC Speed convertible, is all-Bentley (well, except for the coachwork) and all-new from the windshield back.

Not only does the Flying Star showcase some very talented engineering, it shows that the automobile as a form of art is far from dead as long as people have the money to invest in it.

The Flying Star's roof and rear fenders are steel, the widened doors and hatch are aluminum, the trim is handmade, and the oval tail lights are a 1950's throwback. To make this Bentley stand out just that much more, the car rides on 20-inch Borrani X-Ray wheels.

Inside, the cargo area is covered in a woven leather carpet that matches the custom luggage, while the new rear seats fold flat to provide a 1,200 liter storage capacity (with the seats up, storage is limited to 400 liters, still enough to fit four golf bags).

Touring plans to build up to 20 copies of the Flying Star with a "basic price" of €590,000 for the entry-level model (based on the 560-horsepower GTC), while all-important personalization starts at the €590,001 mark.

Customers should know that were they to make that not-insignificant investment, most worries attributed to owning a one-off car (or as good as) have been taken care of:

"The car will be serviced at the Bentley dealers. Bentley Motors and Touring Superleggera have developed a special mutual warranty program, which safeguards warranty clauses for both the basic car, and the transformation by Touring...The model is CEE homologated according to the new low-volume production directive. For the first time since its introduction, the type approval was awarded without destructive test, using simulation and FEM-analysis."

It's good to see that not only has engineering and style evolved for the 21st century, but professional high-end maintenance and safety standards have as well. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a welder and some aluminum sheets to buy.

Bentley Commissions RCA Students to Design Futuristic Concepts

Posted by Mr Dung Monday, February 1, 2010

In a special partnership with London's famous Royal College of Art (RCA), Bentley organized a design competition called "Bentleys of the Future" in which eighteen Vehicle Design Course Masters students took part developing a range of futuristic concept proposals over the last few months.
Now the competition has entered the second phase with four of the participating RCA students shortlisted to refine their designs with Bentley's Head of Exterior Design Raul Pires and his colleagues.
The four finalists in the "Bentleys of the Future" competition are Bora Kim, David Seesing, Marten Wallgren and Mikka Heikkinen.
Bora Kim (26) from South Korea, created a Bentley which allows owners of the vehicle to easily select their preferred engine for any type of journey while Sweden's Marten Wallgren (27) came up with a futuristic version of the Bentley Continental GT.
David Seesing (26) from Germany says his proposals combines "a radical design with impressive aerodynamics" whilst Finland's Mikka Heikkinen (26) created a high-performance Bentley.
The winner and runner-up of the competition will both be invited to join the British automaker in Crewe for a six month secondment in the Bentley design studio.

Bentley's new flagship limousine, the Mulsanne, will arrive in the United Kingdom in the Summer of 2010 with a starting price of £220,000 (including taxes and delivery charges), which comes to about US$365,000 or €242,000 with the current exchange rates, the company announced today.

Powered by a twin-turbocharged 6¾-litre V8 engine that delivers a hefty 512 horsepower, the luxury Bentley flagship will offer buyers a wide variety of personalization options including a palette of 114 paint colors, 21 carpet colors, nine wood veneers and 24 different interior leather hides to choose from.

Bentley said it has already held more than 1,000 private customer previews of the Mulsanne at the company's factory in Crewe, England as well as a series of preview events held at dealerships across the UK, Continental Europe and the United States, and that early customer interest exceeds 2010 production targets

"Even at this very early stage, the expression of interest we've received easily exceeds our 2010 production targets," said Stuart McCullough, Member of the Board for Sales & Marketing for Bentley.

"The Mulsanne's credentials are a pure expression of Bentley design and craftsmanship, and that's struck a chord with Bentley enthusiasts across the globe as well as many of the potential customers we have welcomed for tours in Crewe this year. We've been encouraged by the positive commentary, notably from our American customers as the Mulsanne was privately previewed in seven metro markets across the country."

Production of the Mulsanne will commence at the firm's Crewe headquarters in England in the second quarter of 2010 with each example taking about nine weeks to build.
