This time, Krasnov has come up with a conceptual proposal for a BMW sports coupe with an unusual, yet stylish asymmetrical design. The unnamed design study appears to be partly inspired from BMW's fabric-skinned, shape-shifting Gina concept while borrowing some styling cues such as the tall double kidney grille...

Viper-based Maybach Exelero replicas set to go on sale

Posted by Mr Dung Tuesday, June 1, 2010

[motorward.com]

The awesome Maybach Exelero concept of 2005 received so much attention on sites like WCF that we thought Daimler would build it. Unfortunately that did not happen. Instead as soon as it had finished its mission of testing Fulda's new high performance tyres and appearing at certain auto shows, the Exelero was retired to the company museum.
Now a report says a Swiss company has bought the rights to it and will start manufacturing replicas for sale. While it will not use the original V12 AMG engine, it will make do with a Dodge Viper 8.3-litre V10, which means costs will be saved, but not at the expense of good old fashioned power. Expect to pay around US$670,000 (€544 600).

VIDEO:Mercedes-Benz Reprises Role in Sex and the City 2 Film

Question for our readers: In your opinion, how do four cougar-aged women who can't keep their panties (or their brains) on after one shot of tequila and a guy named 'Mr Big' relate to Daimler's Mercedes-Benz and Maybach products/brand?
While you think about it let us tell you that, as with the first installment of the male-snoozefest that is "Sex and the City", the sequel to the movie that hits cinemas on 27 May will see most characters driving or being driven in a bunch of Mercedes-Benz and Maybach models.
If you're still here, in addition to the Mercedes-Benz S400 HYBRID, Mr. Big (Chris North) now also drives the new E-Class Cabriolet while Samantha (portrayed by actress Kim Cattrall) ditches her GLK soft off-roader from the first film for the more masculine G-Class.

Maybach 57S Coupe conversion by Xenatec previewed

Since Mercedes-Benz's parent company Daimler has no official plans to introduce an 'uber' luxurious coupe for its fading Maybach brand, the company gave its blessing to German-based engineering firm Xenatec to create a two-door version of the Maybach 57S.

Said to be developed in close cooperation with Maybach, the 57S Coupe special will be built in a strictly limited number of 100 examples each priced from a hefty €650,000 or about US$805,000 at today's exchange rates.

The transformation from a limo to a coupe includes redesigned A-, B- and C-columns with the second column moved back by 200mm, a more raked roofline, restyled front and rear ends, and a slightly wider body while retaining the same 3.39m-long wheelbase as the sedan model.

The extended wheel arches of the car are filled in with newly designed 20- or optionally 21-inch alloy wheels.

The four-seater 57S Coupe keeps the standard Maybach S' 6.0-liter bi-turbocharged V12 with 612HP (for the record, in the latest facelift output has been upped to 630HP), so expect about 5.0 seconds for the standard 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint and a top speed somewhere around 275km/h or 171mph.

We'll have more details and pictures of the Maybach 57S Coupe as they come in.

Maybach Brand to be Shut Down

Posted by Mr Dung Friday, March 19, 2010

British mag Auto Express is reporting that Daimler executives have a plan in place to close the door on Maybach.  The ultra-luxury brand, purchased by Daimler-Benz in 1960, was restarted as an automotive brand in 2002 following the 1997 introduction of the Mercedes-Benz Maybach concept in Tokyo.

Maybach was founded as a heavy-duty engine production company in 1909 by Wilhelm Maybach, a former technical director at Daimler.  The company's first concept car debuted in 1919, and began assembly of extravagant vehicles two years later.  The company halted automotive production in 1940, when they began building engines for German tanks in World War II.  Car manufacture stalled for 60 years.

Sales at Maybach have flatlined since 2007, and were made worse by the global economic downturn.  Further, Daimler may be looking to block Maybach from cannibalizing sales within their house brand, as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is scheduled for release in 2014.  The S-Class is set to be a top-shelf car with an impressive touch screen that lets the user control most interior functions with hand gestures.

As we previously reported, Maybach's short-term plans include a facelift only, and no new engines.  A redesign will include LED daytime lights, new grille, freshened bumper, and a hood with a new look.  The facelifted Maybach could get a debut in April at the Beijing Auto Show.

Maybach Facelift Alleged Design Illustrations Surface

Sketches purportedly showing the updated Maybach have surfaced in several publications.  The company is supposedly readying their redesign for introduction in China next month.

According to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, a Maybach employee at the Geneva Motor Show confirmed that the limo's facelift will be in looks alone.  The new design is likely to include an updated front bumper, new grille, remodeled hood, and LED daytime lights.  Engine power output changes are not expected.

The Amsterdam-based newspaper says the facelift, rumored since 2007, has been confirmed by Dr. Dieter Zetsche, head of the Maybach-parent Daimler.  Zetsche told the paper that the engines will fit with Euro V emissions rules, and no other changes beyond the visual adjustments will be made.

Maybach staff will be looking to rejuvinate the brand if they release the facelifted car.  Maybach sales dropped significantly in recent times.

The facelifted Maybach could take a bow at the Beijing Auto Show in April.

VIDEO:Maybach as Portrayed by Artist David LaChapelle

Posted by Mr Dung Tuesday, December 8, 2009

In a desperate bid for attention, Maybach has teamed up with artist David LaChapelle for an exhibit in Miami Beach.

Dubbed "Exposure of Luxury" and "Berlin Stories", the photographs apparently depict a 1930's orgy and rejected cast members from The Munsters (a TV show). If you haven't bleached out your eyes yet, you may also notice the pictures feature a classic Zeppelin DS 8 and a 2010 Zeppelin.

According to Maybach's global brand manager, Patrick Marinoff, "We are very honored that such an exceptional artist like David LaChapelle, with his unusual and at times even rousing style, has interpreted the Maybach brand. The results speak for themselves; these are images that create a new view of the Maybach brand. I am convinced that the founder of the brand, Wilhelm Maybach - himself a great innovator in his time - would have also been delighted." Delighted? Really?

After they are displayed at Art Basel in Miami Beach, the pictures will go on tour at various galleries and museums worldwide. Eventually, copies of the photographs will be shown at the Daimler Art Collection in Germany.
