BMW Sports Coupe Concept by Krasnov Igor

You might remember talented Russian designer Krasnov Igor from 2 of his previous concept studies, a 4-door Ferrari-badged sport saloon and the Marussia supercar. This time, Krasnov has come up with a conceptual proposal for a BMW sports coupe with an unusual, yet stylish asymmetrical design. The unnamed design study appears to be partly inspired from BMW's fabric-skinned, shape-shifting Gina concept while borrowing some styling cues such as the tall double kidney grille...

First Korean Supercar gets ready for Launch

Posted by Mr Dung Monday, June 14, 2010

[WCF]

The Spirra is almost here. South Korea is about to introduce its first supercar, nine years after the Proto Motors PS-II prototype was first revealed to the press. After navigating through rough seas, including being bought out by a company called the Oullim Group, Proto Motors (now Oullim Motors) is confident of a 2010 summer market introduction.
Maximum power will come from a V6 motor with four different outputs. At its meekest, it will produce 129kW (173 bhp/ 175 PS) and torque of 245 Nm (181 lb-ft) at 6,000rpm. The second configuration features a small turbo that helps it push 243 kW (325 bhp / 330 PS) and 471 Nm (347 lb-ft). At the third-highest level is a power output of between 294 kW (395 bhp/ 400 PS) and 309 kW (414 bhp/ 420 PS), assisted by a bigger turbo. Peak torque for this engine is 490 Nm (361 lb-ft).
The most powerful of them all is persuaded by two turbos encouraging between 331 kW (444 bhp/ 450 PS) and 368kW (493 bhp/ 500 PS). The maximum torque is 539 Nm (398 lb-ft). Drive is through the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox. At its quickest it goes from 0 - 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. Top speeds range from 212 km/h to 310 km/h.
Road grip is provided by 225/40R 19 front and 275/40R 19 rear tyres. The Spirra has a mid-engine layout and is constructed by hand.
The body is made from carbon fibre, enclosing a tubular spaceframe. It is all lightweight but very stiff at the same time. The Korean auto industry does not yet have a well-developed supercar heritage and as such, these manufacturing technologies are not common for the general market.

Buick LaCrosse rebadged as GM Daewoo Alpheon in Korea

[GM Daewoo]

More evidence that GM has no intention of replacing the Daewoo brand in Korea. The U.S. automaker has introduced the Daewoo Alpheon at the 2010 Busan International Motor Show - a rebadged Buick LaCrosse.

With the Alpheon, Daewoo is clearly going after its own fair share of the large sedan segment in Korea with this near-premium offering.

"I am confident that the Alpheon will surpass the demands of the most sophisticated luxury sedan buyers in Korea," said Mike Arcamone, President and CEO of GM Daewoo.

For the Korean market, the Alpheon will come with a 3.0 liter V6 engine - likely the same one as in the Buick LaCrosse which rates 255 hp (190 kW). The power plant is coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

GM Daewoo says the "Alpheon becomes a stand-alone luxury product brand in GM Daewoo's product portfolio." Much like its Korean couterpart, Hyundai, have made inroads into the luxury sedan segment with the Genesis model.

Kia Optima Details Released in New York

Posted by Mr Dung Saturday, April 3, 2010

The all-new 2011 Kia Optima (aka Magentis in Europe and K5 in South Korea) was introduced to the public this week at the New York Auto Show.  Built on an all-new platform, the four-door will be sold in three different power levels.

In its base model form, the sedan will use a 2.4-liter GDI four-cylinder engine, but customers wanting more power can opt for a 2.0-liter turbocharged GDI.  Also seen on the new Hyundai Sonata 2.0T, the engine produces 274 horsepower (204 kW / 278 PS) and a healthy 269 ft-lb of torque.  Those who purchase the LX trim will be allowed to choose between the Sportmatic six-speed auto transmission and a six-speed manual.  All others get the Sportmatic gearbox.

A 2.4-liter engine will also be used for the Optima Hybrid, which will be introduced later in 2011.  This will be Kia's first-ever hybrid model for the U.S. market.

Measuring 190.7-inches long by 110-inches wide, the new Kia Optima is 1.7-inches longer than the previous version, and 2.9-inches wider.  It features a MacPherson strut front, multi-link rear suspension with front-mounted anti-roll bars.

The car's renewed exterior was designed by engineers in Frankfurt, Germany, and Irvine, California.  It was meant to have a more "dynamic and streamlined profile," to give the lower-cost brand's vehicle a more elegant look.  The deeper curve at the end of the roofline, and the items like wrap-around taillights, also gives the car a sporty appearance.

Hyundai wheeled out the all-new 2011 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T alongside the Sonata Hybrid at the New York Auto Show.  The car uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder direct injection engine that produces 274 horsepower (204 kW / 278 PS) and up to 269 ft-lb of torque.

With the reduced-lag twin-scroll turbocharger, the car manages 22mpg in the city, and 34mpg on the highway.  The 2.0-liter turbo engine is available on the SE trim as well as the Limited.  Stepping up to the limited gets the buyer 18-inch alloys, dual exhaust, panoramic sunroof, and paddle shifters.

Sprint times were not divulged.

"The Sonata 2.0T is a great example of what our Blue Drive product strategy is doing for consumers," said Hyundai America president John Krafcik.  He emphasised that Hyundai is uncompromising, and the Sonata 2.0T proves it with "more horsepower than any of our V6 competitors, with better gas mileage than any competitive 4-cylinder model."

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T is a part of the automaker's plan to release seven new models over the next two years.

2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Teaser Image Released

[Hyundai-blog]

Here is a teaser image of the U.S. market 2011 Hyundai Sonata hybrid, which Hyundai will be debuting at the upcoming New York Auto Show.

The 2011 Sonata hybrid will have a somewhat different design than the standard model. As is evidenced from the image published here, the hybrid variant will feature its own distinct front fascia. That new face includes a new large-mouthed grill, new headlamps, sporty front bumper with bigger air intakes, as well as new fog lights.

Hyundai's Blue Drive hybrid system for the Sonata consists of a 2.4 liter, 4-cylinder gasoline/petrol engine, a 30 kW electric motor with 205 Nm (151 lb-ft) of torque, and a six-speed automatic transmission. The electric motor is powered by lithium-polymer batteries but Hyundai doesn't say what kind of range they provide the Sonata hybrid. Power figures for the gasoline/petrol engine are also not included, although Hyundai's standard 2.4 liter engine rates 201 bhp (150 kW / 204 PS) and 252 Nm (186 lb-ft) of torque.

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata hybrid will premiere at the New York Auto Show on Wednesday March 31. Prices for the US market will be revealed then.

Chinese car producer Geely has agreed to purchase Swedish automaker Volvo from Ford for $1.8 billion.  The sum is a far cry from the $6.45 billion Ford spent to acquire Volvo in 1999.

The deal was signed on Sunday at the Gothenburg, Sweden, offices of Volvo.  Because the two firms need regulatory approval in several countries, the agreement is not expected to be finalized until October.

Geely's binding deal requires them to pay $1.6 billion in cash up front, with the remaining $200 million to be paid in the future.  It gives Ford the opportunity to focus on its core brand, as well as Lincoln and Mercury.

"For Ford, the completion of the sale of Volvo Cars will conclude the divestiture of our global premium brand portfolio, allowing us to concentrate further on integrating the Ford core brand globally as we continue to execute our One Ford plan," said Ford CFO Lewis Booth.

This is Ford's fourth brand sale in recent times.  The company sold Aston Martin in 2007, and both Land Rover and Jaguar in 2008.

Geely will take over a brand that lost $934 million in 2009, and $1.7 billion a year earlier.  The company believes they will be able to turn Volvo around by giving the luxury brand an immediate foothold in the Chinese market.

The new owners say they do not plan to move Volvo out of Sweden any time soon.  Volvo employs 14,000 people in Sweden, and another 6,000 elsewhere.

“I see Volvo as a tiger.  It belongs to the forest and shouldn’t be contained in the zoo,” said Geely chair Li Shufu in Mandarin.  Referring to Volvo's main factories, Li said, “The heart of the tiger is in Sweden and Belgium. ... Its paws should extend all across the world.”

Volvo production is expected to hit 390,000 units in 2010, up from 330,000 in 2009.

Hyundai Releases Second i-flow Concept (HED-7)

In advance of Hyundai's eight world debuts at the Geneva Motor Show, the company has released another image of the Hyundai i-flow HED-7 hybrid concept - this time it's not a design sketch.  The car is meant to preview a new sedan that "redefines the perception of space" for D-segment vehicles.

Appearing alongside the concept, the company plans to debut the Hyundai i30u, the facelifted version of the i30.  The model will go into mass production just after its Geneva debut.

The i-flow is part of Hyundai's "fluidic sculpture" style theme.  As such, it has an impressive drag coefficient of 0.25, which helps the car run efficient.  The company used a 1.7-liter diesel engine with a two-stage turbo charger, six-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and an unspecified electric motor paired to a Lithium Ion-Polymer battery.  Combined with the low drag coefficient, the car produces a scant 85 grams of CO2 per kilometer, while using just 3 liters of fuel per 100km (78mpg US / 94mpg imp).

Inside, the cabin is centered "around an expansive, contoured screen, which recognizes not only touch but also gestural inputs along its fascia-wide display," according to a press release.  The exterior is finished in a "Liquid Metal" coating produced by BASF.

Meanwhile, the company says the i30u will show changes to design and performance.  Additionally, Hyundai will show off a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle of the ix35/Tucson, and five efficient Blue Drive versions of the i10, i20, i30, i30cw, and the ix35.

2011 Tata Aria Crossover Debut at New Delhi Auto Expo

Posted by Mr Dung Wednesday, January 6, 2010

Amongst the massive display from Tata at the Auto Expo 2010 is the Tata Aria production vehicle. The MPV is one of 37 cars at the company's booth, which also includes Land Rover and Jaguar.Using a 2.2-liter direct-injection common-rail diesel engine, the Aria will work with 138 horsepower, and up to 320 Nm of torque. Although sprint times, weight and top speed have not yet been revealed, expect the car to use that torque to launch forward, getting a bit sluggish as speeds increase. Optionally available is an all-wheel drive unit that delivers torque variably to each wheel, depending on driving conditions.Tata intentionally designed the seven-seater with enough height so "passengers can simply walk into the Tata Aria, rather than climbing" into it. If the driver has less than six passengers, the rear seats may be folded flat to increase cargo room. Interior features include an infotainment unit with GPS, dual climate zones, and surround sound. Six airbags will help keep everyone safe.Reports from the vehicle's introduction in New Delhi claim pricing will range from 700,000 to 1,000,000 Indian Rupees, or €10,600 to €15,150. First shown five years ago in Geneva as a concept, domestic market launch of the 2011 Tata Aria could begin by this summer.

Somali pirates have hijacked a vessel carrying Hyundai and Kia vehicles some 1,000 kilometers off the Somali coast, the South Korean Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs has reported.
The ship, Asian Glory, was transporting about 2,400 cars, most of them Hyundai and Kia models, and was headed to a port in Saudi Arabia when it was captured by pirates. The ship was being operated by EUKOR Car Carriers Inc. and is owned by Zodiac Maritime Agencies Ltd.
Hyundai released a statement to the press via e-mail saying that the cars had been paid for and that the risk now belongs to the distributor. The cars are also insured.
The Gulf of Aden is a tight shipping lane that leads into the Suez canal. About 30,000 ships pass through the region each year, amounting to about 1/10th of the world's traded goods. Merchant ships traveling in the area have been the target of Somali pirates for some time now. The region is currently patroled by about 20 warships from the EU, NATO and other countries.
According to reports, Somali pirates now hold about 12 ships. The Asian Glory has a crew of 25, including 8 Bulgarians and 5 Indians, according to the South Korean Ministry.
