Audi R8 V10 is 2010 World Performance Car of the Year

Posted by Mr Dung Sunday, April 4, 2010

Following the announcement of the Volkswagen Polo being awarded the World Car Of The Year Title, the panel of judges for the competition said that the Audi R8 V10 has been awarded with the 2010 World Performance Car of the Year title.
The R8 beat the Ferrari California and Porsche 911 GT3 for the title, as it impressed the judges with its reasonable price, dynamic chassis and wonderful 5.2-litre V10 engine with 386kW and 530Nm of torque.
According to Johan De Nysschen, Executive Vice President of Audi of America, “We’re honoured that the Audi R8 V10 was chosen by this distinguished group of jurors as the 2010 World Performance Car. This is the fifth year of the World Performance Car award and the R8 has won it twice. Whether you choose an R8 with a V8 or with a V10 engine, you get a World Performance Car award winner.”
Press Release
At a press conference hosted by the New York International Auto Show, Bridgestone Corporation, and BASF SE at the Jacob Javits Centre in Manhattan, New York, the Audi R8 V10 was declared the 2010 World Performance Car.
The Audi R8 V10 was chosen from an initial entry list of sixteen (16) entries nominated by fifty-nine (59) World Car jurors from twenty-five (25) countries throughout the world.
While the winner of the overall World Car of the Year award must excel in a broad range of attributes, there is a segment of the car-buying public for whom performance – in its broadest sense – overrides all other priorities. Candidates for the World Performance Car award must demonstrate a specific and overt Sports/Performance orientation. They must also satisfy the same availability criteria as for the overall World Car award and may be chosen from that list of eligible vehicles.
Additional entrants may include newly introduced variants that satisfy the same criteria, but are derived from existing rather than brand-new models. In all cases, they must have a minimum annual production rate of five-hundred (500) vehicles.
The jurors voted in January 2010 to establish a top ten shortlist. A second round of voting occurred in February when jurors were asked to score the top ten candidates based on merit, value, safety, environment, significance and emotional appeal. The World Performance was chosen from those top ten finalists as tabulated by the international accounting firm KPMG.
The World Car Awards jurors observed that, “In the opinion of many a judge on the World Car Awards jury, Audi has at long last satisfied our hunger for a street car that lives up to the excitement of the original Le Mans series-dominating R8 LMP1 car that changed the endurance racing game starting in the 2000 season. This civilian trim über R8 shares the 5.2-liter engine and chassis of the more powerful and lighter Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4, so that we all really liked driving it this year should come as little surprise. With 525 metric horsepower and a big exhaust note, this Audi has been clocked to a 60-mph acceleration time of just 3.4 seconds by several publications worldwide. Almost as impressive as the minimum $150,000 those fortunate enough get to pay for one.”
The top three contenders for 2010 World Performance Car title were, in alphabetical order, the Audi R8 10, the Ferrari California and the Porsche 911 GT3.
“”We’re honored that the Audi R8 V10 was chosen by this distinguished group of jurors as the 2010 World Performance Car,” said Johan De Nysschen, Executive Vice President of Audi of America. “This is the fifth year of the World Performance Car award and the R8 has won it twice. Whether you choose an R8 with a V8 or with a V10 engine, you get a World Performance Car award winner. The records also show that an Audi has won this award three times. The truly global nature of the World Car jury is evidence that Audi is hitting the performance car sweet spot of car lovers around the world.”
Previous World Performance Car winners were the Nissan GT-R in 2009, the Audi R8 in 2008, the Audi RS4 in 2007 and the Porsche Cayman S in 2006.
Prime Research International, a global leader in strategic communication research and consultancy, has joined forces with the World Car Awards to form a unique research partnership that will provide strategic reports in 2010, analyzing global automotive media coverage.
Now in their seventh year, the annual World Car awards have become one of the world’s most prestigious, credible and significant programs of its kind.
The awards were inaugurated in 2003, and officially launched in January 2004, to reflect the reality of the global marketplace, as well as to recognize and reward automotive excellence on an international scale. The awards are intended to complement, not compete, with existing national and regional Car of the Year programs.

Kia Optima Details Released in New York

The all-new 2011 Kia Optima (aka Magentis in Europe and K5 in South Korea) was introduced to the public this week at the New York Auto Show.  Built on an all-new platform, the four-door will be sold in three different power levels.

In its base model form, the sedan will use a 2.4-liter GDI four-cylinder engine, but customers wanting more power can opt for a 2.0-liter turbocharged GDI.  Also seen on the new Hyundai Sonata 2.0T, the engine produces 274 horsepower (204 kW / 278 PS) and a healthy 269 ft-lb of torque.  Those who purchase the LX trim will be allowed to choose between the Sportmatic six-speed auto transmission and a six-speed manual.  All others get the Sportmatic gearbox.

A 2.4-liter engine will also be used for the Optima Hybrid, which will be introduced later in 2011.  This will be Kia's first-ever hybrid model for the U.S. market.

Measuring 190.7-inches long by 110-inches wide, the new Kia Optima is 1.7-inches longer than the previous version, and 2.9-inches wider.  It features a MacPherson strut front, multi-link rear suspension with front-mounted anti-roll bars.

The car's renewed exterior was designed by engineers in Frankfurt, Germany, and Irvine, California.  It was meant to have a more "dynamic and streamlined profile," to give the lower-cost brand's vehicle a more elegant look.  The deeper curve at the end of the roofline, and the items like wrap-around taillights, also gives the car a sporty appearance.

Hyundai wheeled out the all-new 2011 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T alongside the Sonata Hybrid at the New York Auto Show.  The car uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder direct injection engine that produces 274 horsepower (204 kW / 278 PS) and up to 269 ft-lb of torque.

With the reduced-lag twin-scroll turbocharger, the car manages 22mpg in the city, and 34mpg on the highway.  The 2.0-liter turbo engine is available on the SE trim as well as the Limited.  Stepping up to the limited gets the buyer 18-inch alloys, dual exhaust, panoramic sunroof, and paddle shifters.

Sprint times were not divulged.

"The Sonata 2.0T is a great example of what our Blue Drive product strategy is doing for consumers," said Hyundai America president John Krafcik.  He emphasised that Hyundai is uncompromising, and the Sonata 2.0T proves it with "more horsepower than any of our V6 competitors, with better gas mileage than any competitive 4-cylinder model."

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T is a part of the automaker's plan to release seven new models over the next two years.

Subaru is closing the styling gap between the Impreza WRX and STI models with the release of the wide-body 2011 Impreza WRX sedan and hatchback that had their world premiere today at the New York auto show.

By adopting the styling lines of the high-performance STI with the wider body look, including a wide track front and rear as well as beefier 17-inch alloys and 235/45R17 tires, the 2011 Impreza WRX boasts a more aggressive road presence than its predecessor.

Both the four-door sedan and 5-door hatchback models continue to be powered by a 265-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder boxer engine teamed with a 5-speed manual transmission.

In the U.S., sales of the revised 2011 Impreza WRX are schedule to start in the summer.

2011 Suzuki Kizashi Sport Unveiled Ahead of New York Show

Suzuki is adding a pinch of sportiness to its Kizashi mid-size sedan for the 2011 model year. If you're expecting a more powerful engine than the standard 178HP 2.4-liter four-cylinder that's offered across the range, then you'll be disappointed as the 'Sport' grade is mostly about looks.

Offered exclusively on the Kizashi GTS and SLS trim levels, Suzuki's definition of 'Sport' (talk about a word losing its meaning...) translates to custom light weight 18-inch alloy wheels and a 10mm lower ride plus a honeycomb lower grille, chrome accents on the front bumper and doors, discreet side skirts and a boot lid spoiler.

Inside, the Kizasi Sport gets aluminum accents and perforated leather on the steering wheel and, when equipped with black leather interior, contrasting stitching on the leather seats, shifter boot and emergency brake boot.

The new Kizashi Sport is scheduled to go on sale in the United States this August, with pricing to be announced closer to the vehicle's arrival in showrooms.
