German engineering and manufacturing firm The Schaeffler Group has introduced a new concept vehicle based on the Porsche Cayenne V8 that delivers 10.1% better fuel economy, while reducing CO2 emissions by the same amount. The CO2ncept-10% is currently on display at the ATZ/MTZ Congress in Esslingen, Germany, which has invited presentations on "Friction Reduction in the Powertrain."

Engine based modifications account for the majority of the improvements. Replacing hydraulic cam phasers with electromechanical units, optimization of side intake switching tappets, and adjusting the VarioCam Plus valve system led to a 4.1% reduction in fuel use and emissions. By minimizing friction in the belt drive, chain drive, and valve train, another 1.7% was shaved off.

Using an electromechanical roll stabilizer instead of a hydraulic model also helped. Combined with new wheel bearings, the adjustments added another 3.2% in efficiency. Using double-row angular ball bearings in the front and rear differentials added 1.1% in fuel savings.

"To us, the CO2ncept-10% is impressive proof of a continuing optimization potential that is also closely related to volume production," said Dr. Robert Plank, Manager of Corporate Engineering at Schaeffler. "CO2ncept-10% is the sum of its components, and these components are only a few from the Schaeffler Group’s portfolio that allow similar levels of energy efficiency optimization to be reached for vehicles from other segments."

Schaeffler Group's ability to increase fuel economy without stripping any weight off the Cayenne, and without swapping out the engine, is very significant. Dr. Plank believes this is due to auto manufacturers and suppliers working cooperatively.

Perhaps the CO2ncept-10% Porsche Cayenne V8 should be in Copenhagen this week, accompanying the eRUF Stormster Cayenne EV, instead of Germany.
