Land Rover Confirms 2WD Version of Upcoming LRX, Releases New Info on Hybrids
[Scoop]
Land Rover's new sub-Freelander entry, based on the LRX concept, will be offering buyers the option of either 2- or 4-wheel drive. If the former is preferred, Land Rover assures people it will be the cleanest vehicle ever offered by the manufacturer, emitting "less than" 130 g/km of CO2.
The British firm's managing director Phil Popham says, "A 2WD option is just one way in which we are developing our vehicles efficiency whilst adding to the Land Rover range and expanding our customer base."
"We will continue to make the 'world's finest all-terrain vehicles' for those customers who require 4WD but will also now offer an alternative to those that don't," Popham added.
Points of interest when developing this new, efficient Rover, were primarily reducing weight and cutting parasitic drive train losses.
The diesel-electric "range_e" power train that we recently showed you will begin development this year and be available in the 2012-2013 time frame.
Range_e will utilize Rover's 3.0 liter turbo-diesel TDV6 with electric assistance and an 8-Speed ZF transmission. The goals are less than 100g/km of CO2, a top speed of 120 mph (193 km.h), and an electric range of 20 miles or 32 kilometers.

VIDEO:BMW to Supply Carbon Motors Police Cars with Diesel Engines
[BMW]
BMW will be supplying diesel engines to US police car maker Carbon Motors.
Carbon Motors Corp. is a US manufacturer which exclusively builds law enforcement vehicles for police departments and government agencies in the United States. Carbon Motors has now opted to equip its vehicles with diesel engines to help reduce the CO2 emissions of law enforcement vehicles and make its product more lucrative to prospective buyers.
BMW will be supplying Carbon Motors with (inline) six-cylinder diesel engines as well as the the entire cooling and exhaust systems for the motor. The deal also includes BMW supplying the automatic transmissions to mate to the diesel powerplants.
Ian Robertson, director of Sales and Marketing at BMW AG, said that around 13,000 or 14,000 orders had already been placed for police cars for which BMW will be supplying the powertrain. Robertson said BMW will be providing the most advanced diesel technology in the world to Carbon Motors, including BMW EfficientDynamics technology which has become standard in all BMW models and improves the fuel efficiency of its vehicles.

It offers up to 51.4mpg UK on the extra urban cycle and 42.2mpg UK combined, with CO2 emissions of 177g/km.
The Cruze 2.0 VCDi LT Auto is priced £17,145 on-the-road and comes with several standard features including full climate control, parking sensors, cruise control, front fog lamps, 17-inch alloy wheels, rain sensitive wipers, automatic headlights, a six-CD autochanger and MP3 socket, and an alarm system.
New Volvo S80 and V70 DRIVe with 1.6-liter Diesel Return 4.5lt/100km - 52.3 mpg US with 119g/km CO2
Both cars continue to use a 1.6-liter diesel with 109HP and 240Nm of peak torque that's hooked up to a five-speed manual gearbox.
However, Volvo's engineers employed a smart battery recharging system that 'forces' the alternator to charge the battery only when the engine is operating at low load , while they also redesigned the tensioner and alternator pulleys.
"Smart battery recharging is the most important measure," says Ulf Nordström, Technical Project manager at Volvo Cars.
"It is primarily thanks to this that we have dipped below the 120-gram level that gives car owners tax breaks and other benefits in a number of European countries. What is more, one might say that we offer the normal driver one free tank of fuel a year," Nordström added.
The Swedish automaker said that the reduction in fuel consumption from a combined 4.9 lt/100 km to 4.5 l/100 km means that someone driving 15,000 km a year will save 60 liters of diesel or as Nordström put it, one fuel tank.
Volvo did not disclose any performance figures for the updated 2010MY S80 and V70 DRIVe, but just to get an idea, the 2009MY S80 DRIVe accelerates from standstill to 100km/h in a claimed 12.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 118mph or 189 km/h.
We say that, while any efforts to improve CO2 emissions and fuel consumption are more than welcome, fitting a puny 1.6-liter diesel engine in cars of the size and weight of the S80 and V70, isn't exactly pioneering anything new...
[CC]
To achieve these figures, Opel/Vauxhall's engineers swung an army of mechanical and aero improvements into action.
First of all, the newly developed 1.3 CDTi 95-horsepower diesel engine, which recently made its debut on the 2010 Corsa, features a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and re-programmed engine control settings, while the standard five-speed manual gearbox has received new ratios to optimise economy.
To better airflow around the vehicle, there's a new active aero shutter that opens to allow air past the engine at low vehicle speeds, and then automatically closes at higher speeds to smooth airflow at the front of the car.
Other improvements include re-tuned aerodynamics on the underside of the car, low resistance tires, and to help drivers take advantage of these changes, there's a gear change-up light on the instrument panel.
The new Astra ecoFLEX will be available in S, Exclusiv and SE grades, and for the first time, in a sportier SRi trim also.
Peugeot 308CC Hardtop Convertible gets New 1.6-Liter HDi Diesel Engine
Its maximum output is 112 horsepower at 3,600 rpm or 2HP more than the current 1.6L diesel. Peak torque is also up at 270 Nm or 199.2 lb-ft at 1,750 rpm, an increase of 12.5% over the current unit, and during overboost, 285 Nm compared to 260 Nm.
Peugeot said that between this new 1.6 litre HDi and its same displacement predecessor, more than 50 % of the parts have been entirely redesigned resulting to more power as well as noise reduction, better fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions.
As with the its predecessor, the new 1.6 litre HDi comes as standard with a diesel particulate emission filter (FAP) with a service life of 112,000 miles.
Paired to a six-speed manual gearbox, the new diesel propels the 308CC from zero to 62mph (100km/h) in a modest 12.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 119mph or 191 km/h, while returning a combined fuel economy in the EU cycle of 53.3 mpg UK (5.3 lt/100km or 44.4 mpg US).
The new engine will be available in the 308 CC in both Sport and SE trim levels and will be known as the HDi 112. Prices start at £21,095.00 on-the-road.
Many in the States still perceive diesel engines as being, "loud, dirty and troublesome," writes Williamson. But that is a far cry from the diesels on the market now. The engines routinely deliver better fuel economy figures, and often expel cleaner emissions than their petrol counterparts.
Changing the stereotype of diesels may be difficult, but it is a gamble several automakers will be taking. Audi, Chrysler, Fiat, Infiniti, Suzuki, and Volkswagen are all considering the introduction of new diesel models to the US, where less than 1% of the passenger cars on the market use the fuel.
It is a far cry from Europe, where 50% of cars sold use a diesel engine. Due to taxes levied in Europe, diesel fuel is often lower priced than petrol in that region, but still more than twice as expensive as in the States. Because of this, European consumers demand more efficient vehicles.
But the spikes in fuel costs in America over the last few years, and the down-trodden economy, have American consumers wanting cheaper-to-run vehicles. It is this mentality that automakers will want to capitalize on.
Ford Launches New Fiesta Van ECOnetic, Returns 76.3mpg UK
These include a lowered suspension, rear wheel air deflectors, 14-inch wheels with six-spoke aerodynamic covers and low rolling resistance tires size 175/65 R14, the addition of a green shift-indicator light, modified engine calibration and finally, a higher gear ratio. Ford says that the new Fiesta Van ECOnetic returns a combined fuel economy in the European driving cycle of 76.3mpg UK which is the equivalent of 63.2mpg US and 3.7 lt/100km, with CO2 emissions of just 98g/km. "The new Fiesta Van has already seen good sales success. Adding the new ECOnetic to the line-up will build on this," said Steve Kimber, commercial vehicles director, Ford of Britain. "Overall, I expect we will sell around 2,500 Fiesta Vans a year, aiming to take around 25 per cent of the car-derived market." he added. Here in the States, we'll have to wait another good six months to get the passenger version of the new Fiesta, but in Britain, Ford is expanding the Fiesta Van's range with an eco-friendly, fuel efficient model that joins the firm's ECOnetic lineup. Priced at £11,635 or about US$19,000 at today's exchange rates, the Fiesta Van ECOnetic is powered by a 1.6-litre TDCi with coated diesel particulate filter and features with several upgrades over the standard model.
