Overview of the 2010 Detroit exhibition

Detroit Auto Show Fire Given the All Clear After Evacuation

A fire at Detroit's Cobo Center forced the evacuation of the North American International Auto Show yesterday. There were no injuries, and damage was reportedly at a minimum.

Attendee Karen LaDucer told the Detroit Free Press that she saw the blaze coming from the ceiling along the Audi exhibit. Audi's team were able to get show visitors out of harm's way, while simultaneously moving their vehicles.

Amongst the cars was the luxe Audi R8 Spyder, a $175k sports car.

"The Audi employees tried moving people off the floor, and started moving the cars," Ohio University student Kelly Strong told the newspaper. "The flames really spread fast. They did a good job making sure people got out of there."

Investigators believe the fire started above the Audi stand amongst the lighting and scaffolding. After evacuating the convention center, attendees were allowed back in by 5:30pm. The show's doors should open today as scheduled.

The new XTS Sedan Concept looks promising and all but the real star at Cadillac's 2010 NAIAS booth is the 2011 CTS-V Coupe. Basically, it's a slightly more compact, two-door version of the CTS-V sedan sharing the same 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine with 556HP and a whopping 551 lb.-ft. of torque (747 Nm).

Offered with a choice of a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle-shift control that transfer power to the rear wheels through a limited slip differential, the CTS-V Coupe is propelled from 0 to 60mph (96km/h) in a mere 3.9 seconds.

Revenge Verde Supercar Concept Hits the Detroit Show Floor

On Tuesday in Detroit, Revenge Designs President and CEO Peter Collorafi introduced the Revenge Verde Supercar Concept at the North American International Auto Show. Based in Decatur, Indiana, the engineering firm plans to build 3,000 Verde supercars in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana over the next four years.

Built by Roush Performance, the Verde prototype's carbon fiber body sits on an aluminum chassis with three engine options. They include Ford Racing's 605-horsepower crate engine, Corvette ZR1 engine with 630hp, and a hybrid V8 engine built by Ohio based HP2G. That H2PG powertrain runs on E85 (ethanol) fuel coupled with an electric motor. It claims a mileage figure of over 110 mpg (2.14 liters/100 km). Power is said to max out at 400 hp and 500 lb-ft (677 Nm) of torque.

Revenge Designs previously stated that the hybrid powertrain would not be featured in the Verde prototype at Detroit. They did not have enough time to get the hybrid version of the Verde ready for the show. Over the past three months, engineers at Roush Performance developed a clay model followed by the 1:1 prototype on display in Detroit.

Besides the domestic market Collorafi is planning to sell the Verde outside of the United States. With a price of $200,000 Collorafi makes references to competitors such as AC Cars Cobra MkVI replica and the Veritas RS III.

2011 Ford Mustang Live in Detroit

The 5.0-liter V8-powered 2011 Ford Mustang GT was unveiled at the NAIAS yesterday. The beefy engine produces 412-horsepower and up to 390 ft-lb of torque to power the car to 60mph in under 4.7 seconds.

Ford's upgrade of the engine from a 4.6-liter V8 accounts for a 97-horsepower and 65 ft-lb increase. Even with the bigger, more robust engine efficiency is increased slightly. Using the six-speed automatic generates a 17/25mpg rating. A six-speed manual will also be available, though no improvement in the 16/24mpg rating is expected.

With more power, you would expect the Brembo brakes to be standard, but they are being sold separately, as are the new 19-inch alloys. Standard equipment will include a new suspension, electronic power-assisted steering, and a more aerodynamic rear decklid.

Pricing on the 2011 Ford Mustang GT has not yet been revealed.

Cadillac XTS Platinum Concept Foretells DTS Replacement

[CC] Meet the Cadillac XTS Platinum Concept that made its world debut at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show in Detroit. Officially, the XTS is just a design study that showcases Cadillac's emerging top-of-the-line Platinum series of models, but unofficially, it previews the Detroit firm's DTS replacement in the full-size sedan segment that's pegged make its way onto the market by 2012.

General Motors did not say which platform the concept is based on, but judging from the XTS' wheelbase length of 111.7 inches or 2,837mm that is identical to the new Buick LaCrosse, we'd say that it rides on a modified version of the Epsilon II.

Even though it shares the same wheelbase with the LaCrosse, the XTS is 6.6 inches longer at 203.5 inches (5,170mm) and 1.7 inches wider at 74.8 inches (1,900mm).

You may have noticed that we haven't said anything about the XTS' exterior design. That's because we can't decide if we find it elegant or boring. We're probably leaning towards the second, but feel free to tell us what you think in the comment section below.

The concept's interior is a bit more intriguing style-wise, but nothing groundbreaking - or at least not for anyone under the age of 50...

Moving on the XTS Platinum concept's hardware, Cadillac fitted the full-size sedan with a plug-in hybrid electric propulsion system (PHEV). It combines a direct-injection V6 petrol engine and electric motors to drive all-four wheels. The system delivers an estimated output of 350 horsepower (260 kW) and 295 lb.-ft. of torque (400 Nm).

2011 Chevrolet Cruze U.S. Production Version

[WCF] GM brought the North American production edition of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze to the NAIAS. Already being sold in Asia and Europe, the Cruze came back to the States following its Los Angeles launch last year.

The Cruze LS will feature a 1.8-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine generating 136 horsepower and up to 123 ft-lb of torque. Cruze LT and LTZ buyers will instead get a turbocharged 1.4-liter Ecotec generating 138 horsepower and as much as 148 ft-lb of torque. The engines may be mated to either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Fuel economy is expected to be around 40mpg.

Standard equipment includes stability control, six-speaker stereo, 16-inch wheels, and soft-touch interior components. Options include Bluetooth, heated seats, leather, and satellite radio.

Consumers looking to purchase the 2011 Chevy Cruze can expect to spend at least $16,000. The car will come on the NA market beginning in the second half of the year.

Toyota FT-CH Dedicated Hybrid Concept Unveiled in Detroit

Toyota has introduced a new hybrid concept as one possible future of urban commuting. The Toyota FT-CH was introduced today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

A full 22-inches shorter than the Prius, it is no surprise that the CH stands for "compact hybrid." Although Toyota says the four-seater is more maneuverable due to the trimmed length, the sacrifice would surely be in rear legroom and cargo area.

Performance figures were not estimated.

Engineers at a Toyota facility in Nice, France, designed the car to appeal to the retro 80's gamers amongst us. The company used an "8-bit" motif, intending "to be fun and innovative, colorful and stylish, with strong appeal to young buyers."

The Japanese automaker is taking a sizable gamble on the hybrid and electric market. Model year 2012 will see the introduction of more Toyota battery electric and plug-in hybrids vehicles, with hydrogen fuel cell models hitting the market in 2015.

“The strategy is still taking shape and obviously it will require additional models to qualify as a family,” said Toyota Motor Sales US president Jim Lentz. “Among others, the FT-CH is a concept that we are considering.”

SMS Supercars 620 Camaro First Photos Released

SMS has released the first pictures of the 620 Camaro as it makes its official unveiling at the North American International Auto Show.Boasting a modest body kit (with a ‘Red Butterfly' side induction hood, revised side skirts, and a new front spoiler), the 620 looks aggressive but restrained. Inside, the car features new gauges and sport seats upholstered in Alcantara and leather. Power comes from a 6.2-liter V8 engine that produces 575 hp and 600 ft-lb of torque. It enables the Camaro to accelerate from 0 to 60 in under 4.3 seconds. If that isn't impressive enough, SMS also offers the 620X. Packing 715 hp and 700 ft-lb of toque, the 620X can run from 0 to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds or less.Both models are outfitted with a SMS 296TM Supercharger, a high performance braking system, and a six-speed manual transmission. Options include magneto-rheological semi-active dampers, a torvec isotorque rear differential, a six-speed automatic transmission, and 21-inch rear wheels.

Look for more information to be released when the 620 Camaro is launched in the second quarter of 2010.

Audi e-tron Detroit Concept: All New Electric Sports Coupe, Smaller than the TT

Called the Audi e-tron Detroit showcar, the vehicle is a variant of the e-tron concept first shown at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. When looking at the Frankfurt e-tron an R8 instantly comes to mind. However, the Detroit e-tron is actually 27 cm (10.63 inches) shorter in length and 12 cm (4.72 inches) narrower and only 1 cm (0.39 inch) shorter in height. It has a gross weight of around 1,350 kg (2976.24 lbs), which is 250 kg (551.16 lbs) less than the Frankfurt e-tron.

With such a significantly smaller profile, can it be speculated that the Detroit e-tron is actually a preview of the much rumored "baby R8" also known as the R4? It was back in late 2007 that we received first wind of the R4 when an alleged leaked document containing the entire 5 year new product rollout schedule was published. Since then rumors have been inconsistent.

Two electric motors drive the front and rear axles. Together they make 150kW (204hp) and 2,650 Nm (1954.54 lb-ft) of torque which can be freely varied between the wheels as required. The car is said to accelerate from 0 - 100km/h in 5.9 seconds and is limited to 200km/h (124mph).

The lithium-ion battery employed can be recharged in around 11 hours from a household socket when completely empty, or in just two hours from a 400V source. An energy-recovery system is used to recoup wasted brake energy whenever the car's brakes are applied.

Audi's design team kept the trapezoidal single-frame grille with two large air intakes. LED lighting technology is used for illumination. Instead of foglights though Audi made the headlights to be variable, meaning they adapt to prevailing situations, whether it is extreme darkness, rain or fog covering the road. Wheels are 19-inch size with a 35-spoke design, 235/35 tyres up front and 255/35 tyres at the rear.

Inside, many of the components found in a petrol-powered car are absent, including components for the transmission. The MMI system is inspired by touch-screen smart phones and can communicate with the driver's cell phone from very long distances.
